Studying the Bible: Keeping our focus on God.

by admingp

Is studying the Bible necessary? The answer is yes, for many reason. The one reason we will examine here is simply that whatever you fill your mind with is what will guide you in your daily lives.

Does today’s hectic life style and troubles keep you from remembering what is important in life? Is God’s Word the foundation for your life? If we forget to make a point on reflecting on God daily, life is very good at  keeping us from  focusing on what matters. How easily it is for us to concentrate only on our needs and concerns.  By doing this we fill our thoughts with temporal things instead of eternal things. With our focus on the things of this life we easily lose site of what matters most.

As believers we know God is real and He has given us His Word so we can know Him and His thoughts. However, if we have little to no interest in the Bible, we will remain weak. We will easily falter in the storms life throws are way. In times of desperation we should be a beacon of light for Christ. Unfortunately, if we let distractions get in the way of our spiritual relationship with God, instead of being a beacon we are just a dim bulb. We will have a difficult time attracting others to Christ and will likely make many unwise decisions.

Where is your Focus?

This focus on the things of this world makes it easy for us to keep God at the fringes of our life. Soon, we become so focused on our immediate satisfaction that we don’t make time for God or even miss His guidance in our lives.   This unfruitful thinking leaves us open to attacks. Satan is quite happy when he can deflect the love that should be directed toward God. Satan is always whispering in our ear “you are the most important person”. Our old man is only too happy to listen and will selfishly serve himself.

Studying the Bible will help guide us in our lives. Without grounding ourselves in scripture, the believer can easily lose the path. Thankfully, no matter how far we fall off the path, once we are saved, God’s grace will always sustain us. We have been blessed with an eternal destiny in heaven. It is important to learn to live our life with that focus in mind. We need to live not for the now but for the eternal.

False Teachings and Lies

Our arch enemy loves to use the distractions in life to make us focus on ourselves instead of God. He will seize this opportunities to plant doubt and false teachings in an effort to drive us away from serving God and losing interest in our savior.

Lies and deceptions are techniques that Satan will employ to weaken believers effectiveness. If he can keep believers away form God’s Word, they will remain weak and have trouble discerning a lie from a truth. Satan loves when we can keep believers from Studying the Bible.

It so easy for use to be carried away by false teachings if we do not remained grounded in God’s Word. Our strength to thwart the lies of Satan is God. We find our strength through prayer and scripture thereby feeding our new nature giving us the strength we need. That is why it is important to daily fill our mind with God’s Word. By consulting the scriptures daily it will help keep our focus on God. The more we study His Word  the more we will appreciate the love of Christ. Through Christ we will have the strength to dodge the trickery of Satan.

—2 Timothy 1:13 NKJV “Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”

Reflect God’s Love

As our mind is filled with the nourishment of God’s Word our new man is strengthened. We will appreciate God’s love more each day and begin to reflect that love to the world. It will fill us with a deep desire to actively display our love for God. By studying the Bible we will learn more each day about the depth of God’s love.

We know God has a  deep and constant love for the believer. This love is not temporary but something that will last forever. He will always love us not matter how many times we fail Him. His love knows no bounds.

Being believers we should have a strong desire to love and serve the Lord. Since God is the object of our love, our natural longing should be to please Him. Because of this we will not want to keep the truth of His great love to ourselves but will dearly desire to share it with the world.

God’s Love Motivates Us

One aspect of our outpouring of love for God will be keeping our spiritual fire stoked with prayer and studying the Bible.  Our motivation should not be because God demands it or we want to be perceived as a good Christians.  The motivation for us is God’s love. It is that love which drives us to seek a vibrant living relationship with God who poured His love out for us at Calvary. We should always be actively pursing our relationship with God.

Active Love

Anytime we need a reminder of God’s love we need to look no farther than the Lord Jesus Christ. His love for us was actively displayed on the cross of Calvary. Just as Christ’s love was active for us, our love should be active for God. Disinterest in the Bible should have no place in our lives. The more we nourish ourselves with God’s Word, the more our love for God will grow. That love will naturally begin to reflect in how we interact with the world around us.  Our actions will no longer be motivated by self interest or glory in our own accomplishments. Instead we will seek to please the Lord so that will draw others to God, so that they can experience the love of God for themselves.

—Galatians 5:22 NKJV “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”

—Romans 15:2 NKJV “Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.”

—Ephesians 3:19 NKJV “to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

—Ephesians 5:2 NKJV “And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”

What is the hope of the cross?

I know Christ died my death on the cross so that I may have eternal life. But in everyday life what does that mean to a believer. It certainly does not take the bumps out of the road of life.

The truth about Christ's painful death on the cross is that Christ did not come to remove our human sufferings but to show us a way through it to all of the heavenly blessings beyond.

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,.

He has given us the strength to survive our tribulations until we are called home. His death on the cross is our guarantee!

That is the hope of the cross.
