What is love? The best example is when God demonstrates His own love toward us. This portrayal of love happened when God sacrificed His only Son so that sinners may live. His son suffered, was brutalized, humiliated, and ultimately died a painful death on the cross for one reason and one reason only. —God’s love for you — Through His love God is offering eternal life and a home in heaven. We are being offered life in Christ.
God’s Unique Love
But what made this a spectacular and unique display of love is He extended His love toward those who hated Him. His love was offered to a rebellious race of sinners who would rather spit in His face and actively wore hate on their heart for God.
Why would God sacrifices His only begotten Son for a people who wanted nothing to do with Him? Humanly speaking it does not make sense for a holy God to surrender His Son to death for a group of unrighteous rabble and ungodly sinners. But that is exactly what he did. Only God could have that type of love!
—Romans 5:8 NKJV “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Undeserving Sinners
This was no ordinary love but a very personal love that was expressed through the death of Christ on the cross. There was not an ounce of good in us. We had nothing in us that justified us deserving life. Instead of dealing us the death sentence we deserved God demonstrated his deep love toward us in while we were sinners, Christ died for us!
The penalty for sin had to be paid and that payment is death. As sinners death was our due and we were powerless to change our circumstances. Thankfully, through God’s act of love, Christ went to the cross in our place and delivered us from the death we deserved. The debt for our sin has been fully paid by Christ. We could not pay this debt but by God’s demonstration of love, the debt was paid by the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Gift of God
We should have been given death but received salvation. God did the unbelievable by sending His Son to die for His enemies. Do not let this incredible act of love be in vain. Please take a moment to reflect on this act of love and place your faith in what God’s love and Christ accomplished on the cross in your behalf.
—Ephesians 2:8 NKJV “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,”
