As a believer we are eternally secure in Christ. We have been given victory over the sin condition.
This is the first of a five part article exploring our eternal security. We will be examining Romans 8:31-39 for this series.
Previously, in the book of Romans, Paul has been laying the ground work for our position in Christ. Earlier in Romans he taught justification by Faith in Christ and our sanctification through our union with Christ in his death and resurrection.
We have learned of God’s plan of salvation. It is a plan God developed for us before the beginning of time to deal with sin and provide eternal security for the believer.
It is amazing to reflect that God has a perfect plan for us. To help emphasize the believer’s eternal security in Romans 8:31-39 Paul asks a series of questions to reinforce the amazing thing God has accomplished through Christ in our behalf. In this first article we will look at the first two questions which are found in Romans 8:31
Alive in Christ
Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? …
What shall we say to these things (All the wonderful things God has done for the believer. God reaching out and extending His great love toward us who were sinners and enemies of God)
The first question is a reflection based on what God in His love has done for us. Through this great love, the believer is eternally secure free from the shackles of the penalty of sin.
Ephesians. 2:4-5 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Under the Protection of God
Romans 8:31 … If God is for us, who can be against us?
The second question in this verse empathizes and reinforces that God has claimed believers as His Own.
Romans 8:14-17 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
And since God has claimed us, we are under his protection and no power shall prevail to remove us from Him. No power can take away our salvation!
As believer’s our response is a great rejoicing to “these things” God has done for us. Because of this we can know peace because ”if God is for us,” no power in heaven or earth can separate us from Him.
It is certainly a glorious feeling knowing as believers we are eternally secure in Christ.
As we continue to look at Romans 8:31-39 we will continue to learn how secure we are in Christ!
